Thestorybeginsin1996whenColonelSodhi,now70,visitshissisterandherfamily.However,evenafteroverhalfacentury,thenightmaresofhisintensebattleanditsaftermathoftenreturntohaunthim.OldSodhiandyoungAmarbegintobondandSodhiaccomaniesAmartoBurma(Myanmar)foranassignmentfromBBCtoshootadocumentaryonthestudentsagainsttheMilitaryJuntaforfreedomanddemocracy.InSingaore,SodhivisitsthelaceswhichingbackthememoriesofhimasaLieutenantintheBritishIndianArmyLt.SodhimeetsabeautifulhotograherMayawhoinsireshimtochange.SodhifallsinlovewithMayawhojoinstheIndianNationalArmy.OldSodhilandsinBurmawithAmar,andiswelcomedbyanIndiangirlRani.TheyaccidentallygetcaughtinthestudentrotestandfiringbytheMilitaryJuntatosuressthestudentagitation.WhenthesoldiersoftheMilitaryJuntagetroughandviolentwithAmarandRani,oldSodhiissuddenlytransformedintotheyoungLt.SodhiandkillsthetwoBurmesesoldierstodefendhisgrou.OldSodhiandhisgrou’sescaefromtheBurmesesoldiersrunsaralleltotheattackbytheBritishbombersonLt.Sodhi’sunit.In1944,theIndianNationalArmy,tired,hungry,cold,feverish,sickhadreachedImhaltodefenditagainstalltheoddsiledheavilyagainstthem.InaschoolsetubyRani’sgrandmother,OldSodhifindsthehotograhofMayaandrealizesthatMayahasbeendead.OldSodhi,finallyredeemshimselfbyhelinghisyounggrousafelycrossoverfromBurmaintoIndia,andkeehisromisetoMayathathewouldonedayreturntoBurmatofindherandbewithherwhenhisbodyisblownbytheBurmesesoldierstoashesandglory.
